I first started using this product when I was leasing an 18-year-old Clydesdale mix who was a retired event. He had a lot of arthritis and stiffness and this supplement allowed him to avoid pain and have a smoother relaxed movement. I never had him off of it, though so didn’t really have a basis of comparison.

A couple of months later, Ollie came into my life — a 13-year-old Anglo Arab who had only been a dressage horse from sine he was 3. He was in pretty good shape but had stiff hind hocks. We gave him hock injections which seemed to help for a few weeks but then he was back to being stiff — almost to the point of lameness.

I had some Cosequin OPT left and started him on it and we could tell a difference withing 2-3 weeks. He came out much less stiff and what little stiffness, he was able to work out of quicker. Unfortunately, I ran out and when I went to buy more from the local tack shop, they only had the regular formula Cosequin Equine Powder, 1400 Gram Container. I looked at the ingredient list and it basically looked to be the same only not as concentrated. I figured there wouldn’t be any difference in terms of efficacy. I was WRONG!

Within about a week, Ollie was having problems again. He was not as happy under saddle and was not moving as well as he had been. Even in pasture, he didn’t do too much more than trot for a few steps. You could tell he just didn’t feel good.

I went back to the OPT and once again, he is doing much much better. I was watching him in pasture yesterday and he was running around at a canter and trotting and just having a great time. He is much more relaxed under saddle and comes out ready to work… he doesn’t need nearly as much warm-up time.

I was told by the equine vet that the regular formula is a shorter-acting formula where the optimized has a time-release element. The recommended dose is 2 scoops 1x per day. However, I have found that I actually get better results by splitting that up and doing 1 scoop in the morning and 1 in the evening. My horse doesn’t need grain so I just give it to him mixed with beet pulp. He wolfs it down like it is manna from Heaven.

While this stuff is expensive (Amazon’s price is about 10 bucks cheaper than my local tack shop), it is worth every penny in terms of the quality of my horses life. I know how much I hate feeling old and achy. I would hate to inflict that on my horse — especially when there is a product like this that makes such a big difference. I really can’t recommend this product enough!!
